Built in 1870 as a debating hall by the Young Men’s Literary Club then used as a schoolhouse, the building has been home to the Grange for more than 60 years and sits in the center of the Baptist Corners Historic District of East Charlotte at 2858 Spear St.
The Hall provides a flexible community space for meetings and events, small concerts, and community meals. Restoration of the large windows in the main hall was completed in 2020 and, with the support of individuals and the Preservation Trust of Vermont, repair and painting of the exterior was completed in 2021. We also aim to make the building more accessible and upgrade the interior facilities in the coming years.
Friends of the Lyceum Schoolhouse
Friends of the Lyceum Schoolhouse is a 501c3 non-profit organization which supports the restoration and maintenance of this historic hall in East Charlotte. Our ongoing work program is intended to make an attractive, versatile and accessible resource for the whole community. Our work is supported by donations from the many people who share this vision, and from organizations such as the Preservation Trust of Vermont and the Department of Historic Preservation, State of Vermont. Grants are generally awarded on a matching basis which means that our own fundraising must cover 50% of the costs. Your help is key to the success of this effort to preserve and strengthen this historic resource.
